WHAT IS BIKRAM YOGA?
"Yoga is a Science that works whether you believe in it or not."
Bikram yoga is a series of 26 Hatha yoga postures (Asanas) and two breathing exercises (Pranayamas). It is performed in a room approximately 105 degrees, and an average humidity of 40%. The class is suitable for all ages and levels of ability. The traditional class is 90 min. We also offer it in a 60 min version.
Each posture in the Bikram series is designed to systematically, as well as progressively stretch and lubricate the fascia (connective tissue), work out every muscle, tendon, joint, ligament, organ and gland, while sending oxygenated blood around the entire body. It reaches every cell and restores all systems to a healthy working order, just as nature intended.
This is also why we start with the powerful Pranyama breathing (similar to Wim Hof’s breathing technique). This not only brings oxygen into the tissues, but vital energy, the energy that animates you, known by many names such as prana, qi, chi, scalar, life force, superluminal light, aether, and the Higg’s field. This energy is moved by the breath. Did you know that many cultures use the same word for breath and spirit?
Bikram Choudhury and his guru Bishnu Gosh, a former doctor in India and younger brother to, selected specific Hatha postures in a distinct progression in order to deliver total health through the balancing and strengthening of every system in the body to prevent illness and injury, promote weight loss, and limit the effects of aging.
In addition, the series of postures combine skills of mindfulness, concentration, patience, determination and self control that increase mental clarity and reduce stress.
You will leave each class feeling cleansed and energized. Bikram Yoga builds strength, flexibility, grace, balance and endurance. With this combination you should see the creation of a lean and healthy body inside and out. This may sound like hard work, but once you see the positive effects allowing you to become more focused, productive and balanced, you will be excited for your next class. We hope each session results with union of the mind, body and spirit.
“You are not just a bag of skin filled with bones and joints. You are a multi-dimensional being filled with energy and light. If you remembered that, you would live your life differently.”
(Matriarch of Bikram Yoga)
